Koech of Kenya wins Tel Aviv Marathon in record time for race

Road closures and police reinforcements were deployed across the city on Friday for Tel Aviv’s annual marathon.

In the end, the winner of the Tel Aviv Marathon was Ezekiel Koech of Kenya who finished the race at in 2 hours, 14 minutes and 40 seconds, a record finishing time for the race.

Keter Emmanuel Triop of Kenya took second place clocking in at 2:15:17, and Sammy Limo also of Kenya came in third place at 2:20:14.

Margaret Mjugna of Kenya was the first place winner on the women’s side clocking in at 2:44:20.

An estimated 40,000 people took part in the marathon’s various races, while an estimated 150,000 spectators stood by watching, according to the city.

As of 12:50 PM on Friday, Magen David Adom paramedics along with nurses and doctors from Ichilov Hospital were treating 85 marathon participants.

Most of the injured suffered minor injuries but 7 moderately injured people were being treated for heat exhaustion and one runner was in serious condition with heat exhaustion.

Only the runner in serious condition was not conscious, MDA said.

Last March, a 29-year-old man died and dozens more were hospitalized with heat stroke and dehydration while running the half marathon in Tel Aviv. The run took place on a day that saw unseasonably high weather for that time of the year, and the death of Maj. (res.) Michael Michaelovich led the city to cancel the full marathon which was to be held a couple days later.

Like in past years, the marathon saw most of central Tel Aviv closed off to traffic from 4 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The closures covered a span from Rokah Boulevard and the area of Tel Baruch in the north, to the clock tower in Jaffa in the south, and major arteries like Ibn Gvirol, Dizengoff, and Rothschild.

Police have called on the public traveling to the city at that time to park in lots outside of the center of the city and walk or travel by public transportation.

In addition to the full marathon, the race will included a half marathon, a 10 km. run, a kids’ run, and a disabled persons’ race.
